The Truth About Battle Cry

"Your government is moving each day closer to a theocracy, where a narrow and hateful brand of Christian fundamentalism will rule." -- from the World Can't Wait Call to Drive Out the Bush Regime

Battle Cry is a Christian fascist youth movement.  It is led by politically powerful theocrats who prey on the fears, search for meaning, and moral dilemmas that are facing today's youth.  They claim their religion and values are under attack, but it is Battle Cry ( and the intolerant theocratic movement they are part of ( that has declared war on everyone else!  They are raising an army of youth to conquer the world and impose a theocracy where their hateful brand of Christian fundamentalism is made law.

FACT # 1: Battle Cry is connected to very powerful theocrats and leaders in the country.

Bush appointed BC founder, Ron Luce, to the White House Advisory Commission on Drug-Free Communities.

Battle Cry Partners include: Pat Robertson (who Karl Rove called to discuss Alito before the nomination was announced), Ted Haggard (who brags that his concerns will be responded to by the White House within 24 hours), Jerry Falwell (who blamed September 11th on homosexuals, feminists, pagans, abortionists, etc.), and others.

Battle Cry speakers have included Barbara Bush (by video) and former President Jerry Ford.

FACT # 2: Battle Cry's talk about violence and war are NOT metaphors.

Using scripture and military paraphernalia (hummers, Navy Seals, dog tags, fatigues) onstage, BC is forging an unthinking, obedient army.  Repeatedly, Ron Luce has insisted, 'This is no fake war.'

'This is war.  And Jesus invites us to get into the action, telling us that the violent ( the ‘forceful' ones ( will lay hold of the kingdom.  He is looking for us to join him in the battle of the ages, to aggressively participate in what He and John have started.' ( Ron Luce

Ron Luce polemicizes against 'joining' a church, instead instructing people to 'enlist' in 'Gods Army.'  He tells people to pray: 'I submit all my rights to You.  I deny myself)   I will keep my eyes on the battle, submitting to Your code even when I don't understand, and engaging wholeheartedly in my assignment.  I transfer the ownership of all that I am into Your hands.  I no longer claim say-so for my life, but gladly live according to Your mandate) .outside my comfort zone in the battle zone) '

FACT # 3: The Bible taken literally is a horror!

Most Christians do not believe that the Bible should be taken literally, but Battle Cry does.  Ephesians 5:22 insists that women be slaves belonging to their husbands!  Deuteronomy 22:13-21 insists that non-virgin brides be stoned to death.    Deuteronomy 20, Deuteronomy 32, Numbers 34, and Psalm 137 insist that holy wars should be launched against all non-Christian people and God's armies would burn down villages, rape the women, and bash babies against the rocks.  Leviticus 25:45 instructs us that kids who disobey their parents should be stoned to death.  Leviticus 20:13 insists that gay people be executed.  Deuteronomy insists that all immigrants be enslaved.  Peter 2:18 and Leviticus 25:45 upholds slavery.

FACT # 4: Battle Cry is highly funded, well-organized, and has great influence.

Teen Mania Ministries, Inc. owns at least $23 million in real estate.  Battle Cry sends more than 5,000 missionaries to more than 34 countries each year.  Their HonorsAcademy year-long training program, where students can't listen to secular music, date, or view the internet alone, trains 500 young people per year.

FACT # 5: Battle Cry's program means slavery for women and darkness for all.

At BC's Honors Academy the length of women's skirts is regulated, based on the logic that men must be protected from sexual temptation.  This is the logic that blames women's outfits for rape and that drives Islamic fundamentalists to shroud women in burkhas!  BC upholds the Bible's condemnation of divorce, which would trap millions of women in abusive, dehumanizing, and unfulfilling marriages.  Sex and divorce are not the problem, the oppression of women is!  The moral codes preached by BC will only make this oppression all the more suffocating.

FACT # 6: Battle Cry is anti-gay.

As stated above, BC upholds the Bible's condemnation of gays.  In March 2006, BC marched on the steps of San Francisco's City Hall to proclaim their twisted values precisely because they were 'the very city hall steps where several months ago ‘gay marriages' were celebrated.'

FACT # 7: Battle Cry lies about nation's founders in order to argue for a theocracy.

They say, 'A society fortified by biblical principals and a strong moral code...is the heritage our forefathers fought and died to secure for us.'   But the truth is that the United States was not established as a religious nation.  The word "God" does not appear within the text of the Constitution of the United States. After spending three-and-a-half months debating and negotiating about what should go into the document that would govern the land, the framers drafted a constitution that is secular.

FACT # 8: Battle Cry claims a mandate to conquer the world.

Battle Cry claims America was founded as 'a nation set aside for God's purposes ( a country established for good and fruitfully blessed so that we might take God's message to the ends of the earth.'  It is revealing that for all their talk about the value of life and the scourge of violent imagery, Battle Cry never speaks against the real violence and loss of life being inflicted through Bush's lie-based war on Iraq.  They see this bloodshed as part of God's plan.

FACT # 9: Battle Cry's insistence on abstinence before marriage is deadly.

Research indicates that abstinence-only-until-marriage programs do not delay the onset of sexual activity among teens, and that teens who pledge abstinence are less likely to use condoms once they do become sexually active.  Without open, healthy discussion about condoms, AIDs, STD's and fostering mutually respectful relationships, the emotional as well as physical consequences (including deadly infections) of unsafe sex are greatly enhanced.

FACT # 10: 'There is a moral crises in this country, but ‘Battle Cry' gets it all wrong.'

As World Can't Wait organizer, Sunsara Taylor, continued after debating Ron Luce on Bill O'Reilly:'The government is torturing, carrying out unjust war in Iraq based on lies.  Women are losing our rights to abortion and birth control.  Gays are under attack.  The real challenge for young people looking to live a moral and meaningful life is be part of the movement to drive out the Bush regime.'
