An Evening with Niles
Eldredge
Curator of the Division of Paleontology and the Darwin exhibition at the American Museum
of Natural History Dr. Eldredge, a signatory of The World Can't Wait Call to
Drive Out the Bush Regime, will discuss the battle over evolution as a
microcosm of the state of affairs in society. Introduced by David Helfand,
Chair, Department of Astronomy, Columbia University
6.30 PM, Tuesday, May 2nd
Pupin Hall Room 301, Columbia University
[116th Street

In 1972, Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould, another
pre-eminent paleontologist, proposed the
theory of punctuated equilibrium, a refinement to evolutionary theory which
describes patterns of descent taking place in "fits and starts"
separated by long periods of stability. Eldredge is the author of many books
including 'Reinventing Darwin: The Great Debate at the High Table of
Evolutionary Theory' and 'The Triumph of Evolution...And the Failure of Creationism.'
