A Poem for Oscar: Everybody Knows About Oakland, Goddam!

By Jill McLaughlin

A Twisted verdict came down today

Goddam it takes my breath away

And What that jury really meant to say

"Shoot a Black for free, you don't gotta pay"

Answer to Your Questions: Guantanamo Detainees to Come to Illinois

By Jill McLaughlin

Note: The following is a copy of a response from a World Can't Wait supporter after we sent out a statement saying that people of conscience should oppose and resist the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to the Thomson Correctional Facility in Thomson, Illinois. The response illustrates the questions people will ask those who oppose such a move by our government.  I have put her response is in bold Italics and have put my answer to her questions below her response.

There are SO MANY problems today that it seems impossible to undertake to learn about them all. I support much of what "The World Can't Wait" says and does. And I must confess I have no real knowledge of this situation regarding Thompson, ILL. However, what I have read and tried to analyze objectively this does not seem to be a wrong move. Will it not start the closing of Guantanamo? Will these prisoners be well guarded and unlikely to be released or escape? The people in Illinois and the governor  it seems are for it, in that the situation will provide jobs for many of the out of work people and a protected environment for the prisoners while they are on trial.  What am I missing or misunderstanding? - Pat

“Get Out of the F....ing Bed!”: The “Good War”= War Crimes

By Jill McLaughlin

I came across a story recently that should put to rest any delusions about what the U.S. is doing for the people of Afghanistan. The article relates that the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan said that a U.S. Army division stormed its way through a hospital searching for insurgents late last Wednesday. In the process these troops kicked down doors, tied up security guards and visitors, and forced patients out of beds. Before leaving they demanded that the hospital report any wounded insurgents that came seeking care?

The Clampdown/ What Are You Gonna Do Now?

by Jill McLaughlin

World Can't Wait is having its national meeting November 21st and 22nd. You are needed. Register  Here

What are we gonna do now?

Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a Jew?

’Cos we’re working for the clampdown

They put up a poster saying we earn more than you!

When we're working for the clampdown

We will teach our twisted speech

To the young believers

We will train our blue-eyed men
To be young believers

Remember that tune Clampdown by the Clash?

The American Appetite & What Torture Victims and the World Hunger For

By Jill McLaughlin

I woke on a recent morning and went immediately to my computer to look at my email. I saw an email from a World Can’t Wait steering meeting member with a link to CNN’s Jonathon Mann’s article “Could George W. Bush end up behind bars?”

The story weighed the possibility of George Bush actually serving time for the war crime of torture now that Attorney General Eric Holder has appointed a prosecutor to investigate CIA interrogators involvement in torture. The premise is that once one opens the door to this investigation that one will have to follow it all the way to the top.

Anybody who has been following this story with a critical eye knows full well that this investigation will probably only lead to a few low-level CIA agents being prosecuted.

Kept Alive to Be Tortured: Fire John Yoo!

By Jill McLaughlin

A man hangs suspended from bars of his cell. His feet barely touch the floor, the cord used to tie his wrists digs in deeper each time he moves. Every muscle in his body twists and contorts. His blood is rushing and building in several places inside his anatomy - it is starting to clot. If this goes on much longer he will surely die.

He barely slept the night before as his tormentors allowed him only moments of sleep. They have done this numerous times before. The music will blare and blare until it is imprinted in his brain. Then it goes off and he falls to sleep - til the music soon starts again.

To A Generation Without A Song

 By Jill McLaughlin

Standing around and you’re waiting,
you want to be inspired
you listen hard for the song

that’s gonna

make a statement worth stating
before the melody comes you’re tired
don’t even know what’s right what’s wrong

You gotta

know what’s wrong to make it right
can’t look past the blood and bones
too many suffering while you listen

World Can’t Wait at the LGBT National Equality March

By Jill McLaughlin

The World Can’t Wait was part of the historic march on D.C. demanding full equality for LGBT people. The march was organized and mobilized by a new generation of LGBT people galvanized by their outrage at the passing of Proposition 8 in California on the night of Obama’s election. While some gay leaders advocated patience and waiting for the next election cycles to repeal Proposition 8, these young people were not willing to “wait and see” if Obama would be their ally and be the one to grant them their rights. Thus, this march was organized from coast to coast. Tens of thousands of people marched.

What Do You Do When You’re Under Attack? Go to Omaha!

By Jill McLaughlin

What do you do when intimidation, bullying, and harassment in our public forums has become the norm? This is a norm that is being rammed through by the right-wing pundits and religious right. What do you do when one of the very few late-term abortion providers left has his protection by federal marshals removed just weeks before his clinic will be overrun by anti-abortion groups for two days straight? Understand this. The people who are showing up at the town hall meetings and ripping signs out of a Black woman’s hands and applaud while she is the one being shown on national television being escorted away, and the anti-abortion groups showing up at clinics and celebrating the murder of an abortion provider are of the same ilk.

The C.I.A., Obama, and Torture in the Salt Pit

 By Jill McLaughlin

Not so many years ago a young man lay naked, beaten, and chained to a floor in a place not known by you or me...until now. It is a secret CIA black site called the Salt Pit. If his story is like that of many others, he was probably handed over by warlords or members of a rival tribe looking for a handsome reward. The U.S. military promised monetary rewards for the handing over of persons who were known terrorists or had terrorist ties. In a country as poor and as destitute as Afghanistan you and I probably  can't  imagine how much money the good ol' U.S. of A doled out. Everybody and their brother was a terrorist it would seem. I wonder do the numbers of those detained and tortured number the amount of granules of salt in a salt pit?  Those numbers probably will amount to that at the end of it all-if it ends at all-it,  meaning what our government calls the "war on terror", which seem to have no end.

But let’s get back to that young man, a young Afghan man, who lays naked and chained to the floor.  Well, he died.  He froze to death or died from his beatings somewhere near Kabul.  He died in the Salt Pit.
