Alice Walker on the printing of the 1-20-06 ad in the NY Times:

AS WE SEE OUR BEAUTIFUL WORLD BEING DESTROYED AROUND OUR EYES, AND ALL THE GOOD WE HAVE BEEN TAUGHT ABOUT HOW TO TREAT OUR NEIGHBOR COMING TO NOTHING, WHAT CAN FRIGHTENED HUMANS DO? WE CAN SAY WHAT WE SEE. SAY WHAT WE FEEL. OFFER OUR VOICES TO THOSE WHO HAVE NONE. TELL THE MOTHERS AND CHILDREN AND FATHERS OF THE EARTH THAT WE CARE DEEPLY ABOUT THEIR HEALTH AND SAFETY AND HAPPINESS. WE CAN INSIST ON HAVING COMPASSIONATE LEADERS. WE CAN AT THE VERY LEAST SIGN A PETITION THAT ASKS THOSE WHO SHOW NO COMPASSION TO LEAVE THE TRAGIC STAGE CALLED POLITICAL OFFICE.
