As Votes Were Cast and Counted, The Horrors Continued

By Larry Jones

A seemingly interminable election season has finally drawn to a close. As people trooped to cast their ballots for the future head of an empire of war and torture, millions were hoping for relief from the nightmare of the Bush years.

But beyond the long voting lines and the polling booths, the horrors continued

WOMEN's RIGHTS, LGBT RIGHTS, AND THE ELECTION

By Larry Jones

While Barack Obama was racking up what pundits are calling a decisive mandate on Election Day, the rights of women, lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered persons were hanging in the balance. For women there were some significant victories while for LGBT persons there were a number of defeats. However, even the victories came with warnings for the future. The defeated hoped Obama would be their savior, a hope which may well not be realized due to the president-elect's political limitations and the ongoing strength of the religious right.

Let's take a look at the whole picture.

Illegal Religious Activity in the Military SOULD BE PROSECUTED

By Larry Jones

It's enough to make any rational person very upset over the way some right wing fundamentalists can lie through their teeth and still claim to take the Bible literally, including the commandment not to lie. Fortunately they often get caught by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) not only in their lies but also in their flagrant breaking of federal laws, violations for which a right wing religious group should definitely be held accountable and prosecuted.

The November video of the month on MRRF's website shows a virulent anti-Obama and anti-Muslim sermon by Cecil Todd, founder of a Christian fascist group called Revival Fire, followed by a few comments by Navy Chaplain Brian K .Waite, who appears illegally in uniform.

Obama's All-American Speeches

By Larry Jones

In World Can’t Wait many people say “STOP THINKING LIKE AN AMERICAN AND START THINKING ABOUT HUMANITY.”
That President Barack Obama did just the opposite in his recent speech to Congress is what upset me most about his well-delivered and often charismatic words. He really is smooth as he speaks and in one moment gets very serious and in the next he smiles broadly.

But thinking about humanity was nowhere in his oration. He spoke of America as “the greatest force of progress and prosperity in human history.” It’s a wonder the politicians present didn’t start chanting USA, USA, USA.

He spoke about this century becoming “another American century.” This is a phrase borrowed from the lexicon of arch imperialists, including the “neo-cons” who dominated political theory and strategy during the years of the Bush Regime. The Project for a New American Century, or PNAC, is the organization of neocons who called for an attack on Iraq long before George W. Bush was elected Commander in Chief; people like Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, William Kristol, Charles Krauthammer, and a number of other of that genre.

Whither the Republicans, or, Send in the Clowns

 By Larry Jones

Both of the main political parties offer bad news for the people of the world and we here at WCW don’t support either. Since the Obama inauguration there have been some excellent articles on this site analyzing the direction of Obama’s young presidency, the policies of occupation, war and torture begun under the Bush Regime and now continued and extended by Obama. But, how about their electoral opponents?

The recent gathering of the Republican’s Conservative Political Action Committee featured a procession of war mongering zealots crowing before a frenzied crowd of “USA, USA” chanting, flag waving right wingers. None drew a more enthusiastic response than the buffoonish but deadly serious clown, Rush Limbaugh. Limbaugh’s attacks on Obama have drawn much attention in the main stream media. But this entire event and the political leaders it promoted demonstrate that a social force verging on fascism remains a virulent, aggressive, and dangerous component of the political scene in this country, with the backing and participation of powerful figures within the ruling power structure.

Christian Zionists and the Destruction of Gaza

 By Larry Jones

“So many verses of the Bible have one overriding message-- as Christians we have a Biblical obligation to defend Israel and the Jewish people in their time of need.” From the Mission Statement of Christians United for Israel

A powerful force in U.S. politics is driven by a Biblically based view that the word of God requires them to give unquestioning support to Israel. The murderous assaults Israel made upon the people of Gaza beginning in late 2008 are but a prelude to the kind of warfare they think is needed to achieve their political and religious goals.

Far right Christian evangelist John Hagee is one of the major leaders of this movement. Hagee became infamous for his extremely sexist comment that the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher is lipstick, and the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS is that you can negotiate with a terrorist. (From his 2005 book What Every Man Wants in a Woman.)

This article is about Israel and Gaza, but the above quotes giving his views on women provide some idea of the immorality, backwardness, and insanity of Rev. Hagee, the pastor of the 19,000 member Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, and the head of the Zionist organization called Christians United for Israel (CUFI).

The Reality of Zionism, Not Just the Idea, is the Problem

By Larry Jones

“Zionism is the problem” was the headline of an opinion column by freelance journalist and novelist Ben Ehrenreich in the March 15 Los Angeles Times. Emotionally moving, Ehrenreich stated:

“To be Jewish, I was raised to believe, meant understanding oneself as a member of a tribe that over and over had been cast out, mistreated, slaughtered. Millenniums of oppression that preceded it did not entitle us to a homeland or a right to self-defense that superseded anyone else's. If they offered us anything exceptional, it was a perspective on oppression and an obligation born of the prophetic tradition: to act on behalf of the oppressed and to cry out at the oppressor.”

He quotes the Old Testament prophet Amos in arguing that Israeli Jews should no longer “turn justice into wormwood and hurl righteousness to the ground." I believe he is correct when he says that Israel as a Zionist state is no longer viable if peace is to be reached between Israel and Palestine. But it’s far more than the idea of Zionism that is the problem.

“Rethink Afghanistan”: A Film Review

By Larry Jones

On March 22 the New York Times announced a new online film by activist film maker Robert Greenwald called “RETHINK AFGHANISTAN.” Produced by Greenwald’s company, Brave New Foundation, it is only 12 minutes long but packed with valuable and thought provoking insights, even with its limitations. You can view it here. http://rethinkafghanistan.com/troop_full.php

President Barack Obama has already sent a military surge of 17,000 troops to Afghanistan and a few days ago he announced that he’s now about to send a surge of diplomats and civilian advisors to the country. The problem he faces is the growing reality that the U.S. faces great difficulties imposing a military “solution” upon Afghanistan, and it’s doubtful that very many Afghans want foreign diplomats and advisors to try to remake their country either.

The consistent theme of Greenwald’s film is that the U.S. has no easy way of achieving what could be called “victory” in Afghanistan. Foreign correspondent and author Stephen Kinzer says the Afghans’ outlook is “I will be your friend as long as you don’t do the thing that is most vile in the Pashtun tradition.” Most Afghans are ethnic Pashtuns. Kinzer continues, “Do not invade my woman’s dressing room, do not invade my house, do not invade my complex, do not invade my village, do not invade my country.” As Kinzer says these words, the film shows U.S. troops doing these very things, a point he states with emotion.

A Film Review: Rethink Afghanistan (part 2): Pakistan, the “Most Dangerous Country in the World”

By Larry Jones

Larry Jones’ review of the first part of Robert Greenwald's film can be found here.

The second part of Greenwald’s online film states that “Pakistan is in such a perilous state that Bruce Riedel, a foreign policy expert leading President Obama's Afghanistan review, has called it "the most dangerous country in the world today." Pakistan has nuclear weapons and a government disconnected from the poverty, malnutrition, and lack of healthcare afflicting its people. And though Pakistan remains a U.S. ally, tensions continue to rise as the U.S. considers broadening military strikes, often carried out with pilotless drone missiles, within Pakistan's borders. Part two of Rethink Afghanistan focuses on how the Afghanistan crisis affects Pakistan and all of us.”

As I write this on March 27, more than 48 Pakistanis were killed today and over 80 injured by a suicide bomb blast during prayers at a Sunni mosque in the Khyber Pass area. A government official claimed that Islamist militants carried out the attack to disrupt the supply route for U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan which passes in front of the mosque. See the AP news report.

Obama’s HHS Nominee Signs Law Limiting, Attacking Abortion

By Larry Jones

Kathleen Sibelius, Governor of Kansas, on March 27 signed into law a bill which attacks, undermines, and narrows abortion rights for women.  The new Kansas law “requires abortion providers who use ultrasound or fetal heartbeats monitors to give their patients access to the images or sound at least 30 minutes before an abortion.” It also requires the state to distribute pamphlets about the growth of a fetus and what happens during the medical procedure of abortion, and further requires clinics to post signs telling patients that coerced abortions are illegal.

Sibelius, who is now President Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, has long been under bitter attack by anti-abortion zealots because, among other things, she refused to endorse previous versions of this law.

The law as signed by Sibelius was promoted by anti-abortion groups and right wing religious groups. In her signing of the law, Sibelius, a Catholic who has a history as a pro- choice advocate, skirted past another head-on collision with her opponents on the right.  She may have done that to make her Senate approval as HHS Secretary smoother; instead her middle-of-the-road position has unleashed another round of vicious attacks on her from the right, and muted criticism from some women’s groups.
