What Are Leaders For?

 By Dennis Loo

As an example of the kind of leadership I'm advocating for in this post, see this video of Stephanie Tang of World Can't Wait addressing the San Francisco marchers/rally on March 20, 2010.

In any group or society there must always be leadership. Even in groups as small as two, leadership is exercised, even if that leadership role falls to a different person on a case-by-case basis. Leadership is as necessary as a head being attached to your body is necessary. You might be kept alive by artificial means if you don't have a functioning brain, but you wouldn’t really be viable.

Marching in Protest of 7 Years US Occupation of Iraq

By Debra Sweet

There were more of us than last year, in 2009, when people widely believed the election of Barack Obama was going to end these wars. It’s important we’re out there to go against the tide.

Sunday, Obama went to Afghanistan, on dark-of-night unannounced trip to twist the arms of Hamid Karzai, the president who didn’t win the recent election, but nevertheless is the US’ best hope to secure Afghanistan firmly under the domination of the U.S. empire.

GOP & Tea Partiers: "Let's Beat That Other Side to a Pulp!"

By Dennis Loo

On March 21, 2010, the day that the health care bill passed Congress, Republican Representative Steve King of Iowa shouted to a Capitol gathering of Tea Partiers, "If I could start a country with a bunch of people, they'd be the folks who were standing with us the last few days. Let's hope we don't have to do that! Let's beat that other side to a pulp! Let's take them out. Let's chase them down. There's going to be a reckoning!"
The RNC put out a fundraising appeal featuring a picture of Speaker Nancy Pelosi surrounded by flames. The RNC's finance chairman stated that it was time to put Pelosi "on the firing line." Sarah Palin on her Facebook page called for her followers to "RELOAD" and posted a picture of the 48 states with a riflescope targeting each district of Democrats who voted for the health care bill.

Abortion Rights: Still on OUR Agenda

By Debra Sweet

The film Abortion, Morality and the Liberation of Women is being seen by people via YouTube and through organized showings, including at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro last month. This is exactly the kind of conversation we're trying to spark with this film:
"I brought up the three points... that should serve as a foundational basis of what we stand for: a fetus is not a baby, abortion is not murder, women are not incubators, and talked about how those points are probably completely non-controversial amongst the people in the room, but which had been compromised and diluted to near meaninglessness by the sections of the movement that are subservient to the Democratic Party.

No April’s Fool: Judge Rules NSA Warrantless Spying Illegal

By Dennis Loo

The New York Times is reporting in its lead story April 1, 2010 that the government’s warrantless surveillance over all us has been dealt a blow by a ruling of the chief judge of the Federal District Court in San Francisco:

“In a 45-page opinion, Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled that the government had violated a 1978 federal statute requiring court approval for domestic surveillance when it intercepted phone calls of Al Haramain, a now-defunct Islamic charity in Oregon, and of two lawyers representing it in 2004. Declaring that the plaintiffs had been ‘subjected to unlawful surveillance,’ the judge said the government was liable to pay them damages.”

Military Whistleblowers Leak Evidence of US War Crimes

By Debra Sweet

From the UK Guardian Monday, Wikileaks reveals video showing US air crew shooting down Iraqi civilians:

"A secret video showing US air crew falsely claiming to have encountered a firefight in Baghdad and then laughing at the dead after launching an air strike that killed a dozen people, including two Iraqis working for Reuters news agency, was revealed by Wikileaks today.

Why all the Shock over “Shock and Awe?”

By Elaine Brower

This week Wikileaks -  a website noted for releasing classified, hard to get and damning material about what the military and the Pentagon are up to - put up a video of an airstrike in Iraq in 2007 where people were gunned down from above. Two of those killed in the first round of the attack were Reuters journalists. As the strike continued, two children were gunned down from above.
On Democracy Now! a headline on the incident reads “Massacre caught on Tape: US Military Confirms Authenticity of Their Own Chilling Video Showing Killing of Journalists.” On the show was the co-founder of WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, and Glenn Greenwald, Salon.com blogger and author. The release of this video has caused quite a stir on the internet blogs and left-wing websites.

Tiger Woods and Misogyny

By Dennis Loo

Tiger professed love for each and every one of his mistresses, just as he now professes love for Elin today. When he told all of these other women that he loved them and that they could be together forever, told Elin and the world the same, why should anyone - his former mistresses, any of us, and most especially Elin - believe him?

But I want to focus on something else here, other than his lying and the fact that declarations of love from Tiger mean zilch: his misogyny.

If You’re Still an Obama Fan, and Even If You’re Not…

 By Dennis Loo

You might be an Obama fan because you regard him as at least better than Bush.

You might be an Obama fan because you believe that in his heart of hearts he wants to do the right thing.

You might be an Obama fan because you think that a black president is a major step forward for this country.

Behind the Latest U.S. Propaganda Offensive against Iran

By Kenneth J. Theisen

The Obama administration is conducting a propaganda campaign to enhance its freedom to act against Iran. Such actions may include war.
On April 19th the Pentagon presented to Congress a “Report on Military Power of Iran” (see Washington Post article). Just prior to the report being released, the New York Times reported that Defense Secretary Robert Gates wrote a secret memorandum to Obama’s national security adviser General James Jones in January.

About

World Can't Wait mobilizes people living in the United States to stand up and stop war on the world, repression and torture carried out by the US government. We take action, regardless of which political party holds power, to expose the crimes of our government, from war crimes to systematic mass incarceration, and to put humanity and the planet first.
