U.S. Transfers “Control” of Bagram to Afghan Puppets: Cynical Attempt to Cover Atrocities Made in U.S.A.

 By Kenneth J. Theisen

On January 9, 2010 the United States and the Karzai Afghan puppet government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which allegedly will turn over the operation of the U.S. military prison at Bagram, Afghanistan to Karzai’s government. This move is meant to deny the prisoners their legal rights.

Imperialist Invasion in Guise of Aid: U.S. Sends Marines to Haiti

By Kenneth J. Theisen

The devastation and death that has occurred this week in Haiti has made me cry as I read accounts and see pictures of the tragedy there. The numbers of dead will likely be in the tens of thousands, if not higher. The whole world is watching and people want to do what they can to help the Haitian people.

But as the Haitian people suffer, the U.S. government is conducting what amounts to a military invasion of a suffering population, and accompanying this with a public relations campaign to portray the U.S. military and U.S. imperialism as some sort of humanitarian saviors. We must not forget the real role played by the U.S. war machine around the world and also in Haiti.

A Time for New Beginnings: Taking on the Christian Fascists in Houston

By Jamilah Hoffman

On January 18th, a group of anti-abortion religious fundamentalists came to Houston to protest at a new Planned Parenthood facility. These people call Planned Parenthood’s new Houston location an “abortion super center” because of its 78,000 square feet, and they call the location of the building itself racist because it is situated near Black and Chicano neighborhoods.

They claim that Planned Parenthood chose this location to target neighborhoods of the oppressed for abortions. Their agenda is to enslave women. Those of us who support a woman’s right to choose, who stand in opposition to the oppression of women, came out in support of abortion rights and Planned Parenthood.

Close Guantanamo, Celebrate Roe

 By Debra Sweet

I am hearing from around the world, and especially Pakistan, that our protest against U.S. drone bombings was much appreciated. We got as close to CIA headquarters as we could, then marched to Dick Cheney's new house.

Drones and artificial intelligence are the weapons of choice for US investment in expanding empire and occupation. We should and will be doing a lot more visible protest of the military and CIA drone programs... (read more at debra.worldcantwait.net)

Will Anyone be Prosecuted over National Security Letter Abuses? Don’t Count On it!

By Kenneth J. Theisen

According to a report in the Washington Post on January 19, 2010, the FBI routinely claimed false “terrorism emergencies” to illegally collect thousands of phone records of Americans between 2002 and 2006 by abusing an already expansive PATRIOT Act power.  The PATRIOT Act was rushed through Congress after 9/11 and gave the federal government broad authority to spy on all of us.

The law was a virtual wish list of all those who had dreamed of creating a national security state in the U.S. One of the new spy tools was the use of “national security letters.”  By utilizing “exigent letters,” or emergency letters, to gain private records for investigations when no emergency existed, the FBI regularly violated the Electronic Communications Privacy Act. The FBI also routinely issued National Security Letters (NSLs) after the fact in an attempt to “legitimize” the use of exigent letters.

New U.S. Naval Base on Jeju Island Meets Strong Opposition

By Larry Jones

The U.S. military, in league with South Korea, is planning to use a new naval base to be built on the beautiful Jeju Island just south of the Korean peninsula. Jeju is known as the peace island. My friend, Kyle Kajahiro, with American Friends Service Committee in Honolulu, writes that “Jeju … has beautiful volcanic peaks and semi-tropical weather, pristine waters abundant with sea food and a deeply spiritual and independent people who resisted the Japanese occupation as well as repression by the military government of South Korea. The famous women pearl divers have historically been the leaders of their struggles and embodiments of their tough, fighting spirit.”

Now, according to the plan, all that will be either destroyed or seriously endangered by a missile defense system with Aegis destroyer warships docked there. Although this is advertised as Korean and “eco-friendly”, the common wisdom is that it will be mainly used as the basis for the U.S. to contain China. (More on this below.) The base port will accommodate 20 warships and two 15,000 ton cruise liners. It will bring in submarines and nuclear powered ships, further destroying what the U.N. has called an environmentally pristine location.

Obama Administration: Indefinite Incarceration Without Trial O.K.

 By Kenneth J. Theisen

A Justice Department-led task force composed of various agencies of the national security state has decided to take the U.S. back to pre-Magna Carta days by concluding that approximately 50 of those held at Gitmo should be held indefinitely without trial.

This was revealed appropriately on the date that was originally set for the closing of the hellhole at Guantánamo by President Obama. Of course the administration has missed that date, January 22, 2010. But now even if Gitmo is eventually closed, prisoners will face indefinite imprisonment somewhere else.

U.S. Offensive in Afghanistan: A Brutal Occupation Intensifies

By Debra Sweet

If you can find news of the largest U.S./NATO offensive of the past 8 years in Afghanistan last week, it's likely to be profiles of the soldiers and Marines who are up against tough odds, but "sure to prevail."

Those odds described by the US command, and repeated endlessly on FOX News, are that the "Taliban uses civilians as cover" and that the Afghan military and police really aren't ready to "step up" and run their own country.

This offensive on Marjah in southern Afghanistan is led by General Stanley McChrystal, the counter insurgency expert brought into Afghanistan by Obama last year to reverse the U.S. military debacle there, and who led widespread secret operations, reported by Esquire last year to include torture, under General Petreaus in Iraq.

Marines & NATO: Spreading Death and Destruction in Afghanistan

 By Debra Sweet

From today’s Washington Post: “U.S. air strikes targeting a convoy of buses traveling in southern Afghanistan killed at least 25 civilians and wounded a dozen more in a bombing that could fuel a political backlash against the ongoing military offensive in Afghanistan.”

Does anyone think we’re getting a true picture of what’s happening in Helmand Province during the US/NATO offensive in Marjah?

General David Petraeus, who runs the whole Euro/Asian military occupation “overseas contingency operation” as head of CENTCOM, says this battle is an “initial salvo” in a military campaign of 12 – 18 months.  So much for U.S. forces leaving Afghanistan in mid-2011.  This is just a start of the U.S. offensive.

Torturer, War Criminal Yoo Must be Held Accountable

 By Kenneth J. Theisen

Last week the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) issued its report on whether John Yoo and Jay Bybee should be held accountable for their actions associated with their role providing legal cover for torture and other crimes during the Bush regime. DOJ found that they are not very competent lawyers and that they engaged in "professional misconduct” by providing poor legal advice, but failed to hold them accountable for alleged crimes.
Yoo played a key role in the Bush administration. His legal memos provided not just the “legal cover” for torture, but also for war, indefinite incarceration without trial, rendition, and massive spying. The report virtually ignores this.

The “National Security” (Police) State Continues Under Obama: Senate Votes to Renew Fascist PATRIOT Act

 By Kenneth J. Theisen

The draconian national security state law known as the PATRIOT Act was set to expire this coming Sunday. The act was passed in 2001 in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and it was basically a wish list for all those who support dictatorship and the violation of people’s rights.

At that time the Bush regime praised Congress for providing it with the “legal” tools to carry out its world-wide war of terror. On Wednesday night, the Senate voted to extend the PATRIOT Act for another year. This is in keeping with the Senate’s perfect record of going along with the continuance of the national security state constructed during the Bush regime.
